Defect Tolerances for Glass (Australia)
Glass quality in Australia is assessed according to standards such as AS 4667, which outline acceptable visual defects and inspection guidelines. These standards ensure safety and clarity for architectural and decorative glass applications.
Visual Defects and Tolerances
- Scratches and Marks
Must not be visible from 3 meters away when viewed through the glass under normal daylight conditions. - Bubbles / Seeds
- Bubbles less than 1mm are not considered defects.
- A single bubble between 1mm and 5mm is acceptable if there is no more than one per 1.6m².
- Bubbles larger than 5mm are not permitted.
- Chips
On framed edges, chips up to 5mm deep are acceptable if the panel will be framed. - Defect Accumulation
Four or more defects within 200mm of each other are considered a defect.
Inspection Guidelines
- Viewing Distance: Inspect glass from 3 meters away.
- Lighting: Use natural daylight, avoiding direct sunlight.
- Position: Glass should be vertical, viewed perpendicular to the surface.
- Viewing Area: Exclude a 50mm wide band around the edge for certain defects.
- Panel Characteristics: Tolerances depend on size and type of glass, as per AS 4667.
Examples:
- Scratches – Lines visible on the surface.
- Bubble / Seeds – Small round imperfections inside the glass.
- Chips – Missing fragments on the edge.
- Defect Accumulation – Multiple small defects clustered together.
DGU Defects:
Acceptable Defects in IGUs (AS 4666 Guidelines)
Inspection is done from 3 meters away, under natural daylight, with glass viewed perpendicular to the surface. The outer 10–15% of the glass (secondary vision area) is more lenient than the central primary vision area.
- Scratches & Marks
- Must not be visible from 3 meters in normal daylight.
- Fine hairline scratches that disappear at this distance are acceptable.
- Bubbles / Seeds
- < 1mm: Not considered a defect.
- 1–5mm: One bubble per 1.6 m² is acceptable.
- > 5mm: Not permitted in the primary vision area.
- Dust / Debris inside cavity
- Small particles that are not visible from 3 meters are acceptable.
- Large or clustered debris is considered a defect.
- Condensation
- Temporary condensation during extreme weather is acceptable.
- Persistent condensation inside the cavity indicates seal failure and is not acceptable.
- Chips on Edges
- Up to 5mm deep on framed edges is acceptable if hidden by the frame.
- Defect Accumulation
- Four or more defects within 200mm of each other is considered a defect.
Not Acceptable
- Cracked panes.
- Seal failure causing fogging or moisture ingress.
- Bubbles larger than 5mm or multiple bubbles in the primary vision area.
- Scratches visible from 3 meters.
Laminate Defects:
Accepted Defects (AS 4667 & Laminated Standards)
- Bubbles <1mm in diameter.
- One bubble between 1–5mm per 1.6m².
- Slight haze or roller wave distortion not visible from 3m.
- Edge slip up to 3mm between layers.
Not Accepted
- Bubbles >5mm or multiple bubbles in primary vision area.
- Delamination or edge separation beyond 6mm.
- Foreign inclusions or contamination.
- Persistent optical distortion visible from 3m.
- Visual Defects – Minor haze or slight roller marks (often acceptable if not visible from 3m).
- Air Pockets – Irregular trapped air between layers (usually acceptable if very small and not clustered).
- Accepted Haze – Light haze within interlayer that does not impair vision from 3m.
- Not Accepted Inclusion – Foreign particles or large bubbles inside the laminate (always considered a defect).
