IGU/DGU Nova-Vision Configuration
U-value
The U-value (also called thermal transmittance) measures how well a building element—such as a window, wall, or roof, conducts heat.
It indicates the rate of heat transfer through the material and is expressed in W/m²·K (watts per square meter per degree Kelvin). A lower U-value means better insulation and less heat loss, which is ideal for energy efficiency, while a higher U-value means the material allows more heat to pass through. It’s a key factor in determining how well a structure retains warmth in winter and stays cool in summer.
SHGC (Solar Heat Gain Coefficient)
A measure of how much solar radiation passes through a window, door, or skylight and becomes heat inside a building. It is expressed as a number between 0 and 1, where a lower value means less solar heat is transmitted (better for cooling in hot climates), and a higher value means more heat enters (useful for passive heating in cold climates). SHGC accounts for both direct sunlight and heat absorbed and re-radiated by the glass, making it an important factor in energy efficiency and comfort.
VLT (Visible Light Transmission)
Is to the percentage of visible light that passes through a glass surface. It is expressed as a value between 0% and 100%, where a higher VLT means the glass allows more natural light into a space, and a lower VLT means the glass is more tinted or reflective, reducing brightness. VLT is an important factor in balancing daylight, glare control, and energy efficiency in buildings, as it affects both visual comfort and the need for artificial lighting.
